Founded in 1920, Welwyn Garden City is located about 20 miles outside London in the Hertfordshire countryside. It is unique in that it is the only town in the UK designated as both a Garden City and a New Town.
Welwyn Garden City’s location – 26 minutes from London’s King’s Cross and a 20 minute drive from the M25 – makes it attractive to commuters and there are a good mix of properties available. The town is built on tree-lined boulevards around a neo-Georgian centre, with the more expensive properties found in the popular West Side development. There, detached and semi-detached cottages also built in the neo-Georgian style can fetch upwards of £900,000.
Meanwhile, homes on the Panshanger estate include many Span-style terraced properties built in the post-war period and popularised in the 1960s. Now thought of as modern classics of architectural design, Span homes were designed to seamlessly merge the outside with a property’s interior and to foster community with their shared gardens – an ethos perfectly in keeping with that of Ebenezer Howard, founder of the Garden City movement.
According to Rightmove, the average cost of a house in Welwyn Garden City last year was £388,084. This was a 4% increase on 2017 and 3% up on the 2016 level of £374,990. Most of the properties sold were terraced houses, which cost an average of £380,330.
